It has been mentioned in previous magazines, that the local Hospital Radio "Ridgeway Radio" have been working with us. They record entire evenings and then edit the tracks for transmission in the Hospital radio schedules. We are very pleased to be associated with Ridgeway and we really enjoy listening to the evenings music all over again.

In February Johnny Collins provided a fantastic evening, and almost every song was a chorus song. The whole audience enjoyed their chance to sing. This is evident in the recordings I mentioned. Johnny boosted our recordings to a whopping 60 tracks. And the icing on the cake is that Johnny will be back in February 2010, where he will be duly inducted into our own Hall of Fame! This is recognition for any artist who has appeared as a guest on more than one occasion. We like to invite back artists who have supported us and proven popular.

And talking of returning people, in May we should see Bill and Keson back to our shores for the Summer- can’t wait!

We pride ourselves at the Sunray Folk Club on providing a broad range of artists and music from within the Folk genre. If you take a look at the annual programme it consists of many different styles, and artists- duos, musicians, traditional, contemporary, etc. We also give a range of floor singers a chance to enjoy our audience and practise their skills. This is useful for those singers who wish to hone their performance.

Come and enjoy.

What a lovely feeling for any event organiser to be able to put the ‘Sold Out’ signs up. We are sorry if you were one of the few who couldn’t get tickets for the Martin Carthy ‘In Concert’ night held at The Sunray Folk Club in January. We did predict it to be a busy night and we were thrilled to say it was a wonderful evening with an excellent support by Paul Downes.

Look out for the next ‘In Concert’ in April with Flossie Malavialle and book early!

Before that, The Sunray Folk Club started off its 2009 calendar with a superb performance by Tim Laycock. Dorset is very lucky to have such a talented performer and we were pleased to see him well again and to welcome him back to our club for a second time. He is now in the Sunray Hall of Fame!

By the time you read this, February will have seen an evening with Johnny Collins - a performer of wonderful sea shanties and ballads and plenty of opportunity for audience participation!

An exciting young duo will be appearing at the club on March 26, The Askew Sisters bring with them a wealth of talent singing and playing fiddle and melodeon.

The club really is going from strength to strength and we would like to thank all our members and guests for their continuing support and also extend a warm welcome to any new members. We are also very pleased to announce that Radio Ridgeway is making recordings of our evenings for broadcast at Dorchester Hospital -what a lovely way to spread some cheer in troubled times.

As was stated in last months magazine, the Sunray program included several of the best exponents of the folk world...Tim Laycock, Martin Carthy and Paul Downes, in January. It is thrilling to be able to attract such stars to the Sunray stage. Had someone said when we started that that would be the case, I probably would have smiled a rye smile, in disbelief.

We are now well into our second year and with the continuing support of significant audiences, we are able to offer a very full program stretching to the end of 2009. As usual, all the information is both on the web and in the leaflets that can be found at the club. If anyone out there is willing to display a poster for us, or help distribute leaflets, we would be delighted.

We can now look forward to some new names and some familiar names, as well as two evenings that feature return visits from past performers. So, a real mix of talented musicians. We try to offer a variety to please as many people as we can, whilst remaining as close to the "folk" genre as possible- whatever that is!

And we are lucky to have several excellent floor singers who help add even more variety to each evening. It is sometimes easy to overlook how testing it can be to stand up in front of 50-60 people and sing your songs. It has to be said though, that the audience we have is warm and receptive, and react well with all of our performers.

For those that haven’t been to the club, we are at the Village Hall every 4th Thursday of the month, as well as approximately three additional concerts throughout the year, held on Saturday. We look forward to welcoming you. Feb09 RK

January

2009

I could start by wishing you a prosperous New Year but that would sound corny in these very tough times! What I wish to say is that I hope you all survive these difficult times and that you find strength and comfort in your family and close friends, and that should you be struggling you ask for help sooner rather than later. Help is usually there.

As for the Folk Club, it would be good to reflect on the months that have passed and they so easily tie in to the need to be a "community". When the times are good it can be too easy to brush aside the need for friendship, but how things can so quickly change.

When we selected the Broadmayne Village Hall, we were immediately impressed by the character of the village and the people who were to become our friends. We have been struck by the help and willingness of the people that have encouraged us and those that have supported us.

The club has provided some first class folk singers that have given us so many nights to remember. I am thrilled that so many people support us. Without the support of the audiences we attract we could not continue.

The year ahead will see an opportunity for the club to grow and become a prime music venue in Dorset for "real" folk music...the music of the people for the people! It’s up to you really.

And in January we have two of the best exponents of the folk world...Tim Laycock (22nd) and Martin Carthy (31st)- guaranteed to be busy nights. (RK)

December

2008

The Festive season is upon us and at the Folk Club we are holding our annual Carols Galore and more evening(18th). Last year we had many carols to sing, mince pies and a good mix of floor singers. This year we are also including a Quiz during the evening, and hopefully a Mummers Play will take place again. So, another fun-festive evening.

And at this time the club starts to look forward to another packed programme for the New Year. The calendar is full and we will see a few new faces as well as some familiar ones, as guests return to us for a second time. And any artist that appears more than once is automatically inducted into our own "Hall of Fame"!

In January we see the welcome return of a local favourite Tim Laycock (22nd), followed shortly by our second "In Concert" evening featuring Martin Carthy (31st). These are two of the finest that folk music can offer and have influenced so many people. We think these evenings will be busy evenings so you are advised to get there early, and you will require tickets for Martin Carthy. Otherwise our club is free to get in, with a Jug Collection.

So come and enjoy the Folk Club when you can, and on behalf of everyone involved with the Club, may I wish you, your family and friends a Happy Christmas. (RK)

November

2008

The Sunray folk club presents a wonderful opportunity on 27th November to see Belshazzar’s Feast.  This duo brings an unique blend of folk with classical music and comedy, plus at bit of music hall.   Paul Hutchinson and Paul Sartin share a musical passion and their amazing musicianship, coupled with wry humour, has stunned audiences around Europe and the States.  Paul Sartin is a member of BBC Radio 2 Award-winning big band Bellowhead and English music trio Faustus.  He also regularly deputises with the Choir of Winchester Cathedral.  Paul Hutchinson is a member of the innovative and progressive folk trio, Hoover the Dog as well as Okavango. He is also a seasoned tutor for Folkworks, Hands On, British Council and the University of Limerick.  Further information www.belshazzarsfeast.co.uk

Supporting them is Nicola Clark.  She is a singer/songwriter with great skill, bringing humorous zany elements to her lyrics. To hear her wonderful voice give life to her songs is to be carried along on a bubbly wave of laughter.    For a taster visit http://www.myspace.com/nicolasings  Doors open at 7.45pm

Also on the 8th November, Roger’s Rant is running at Ceilidh in association with the Sunray Folk Club.  For futher details visit the Sunray Folk Club web site http://www.sunrayfolkclub.co.uk/RR08.htm or contact Roger Harrall on 01258 837371 (AH)

October

2008

The Sunray Folk Club continues to flourish. In August the club welcomed back club favourites Derek Burgess & Kitty Vernon, who sing unaccompanied with a superb range of songs. They always prove popular, and can be seen at most Folk Festivals. Their performance didn't disappoint our audience and in fact it was one of the warmest evenings we have had, with a lovely atmosphere.

The Club has always tried to be that little bit different, and August saw two new things introduced. As a way of thanking our loyal supporters we have introduced a "Frequent Folker Award", which simply means if you attend a certain number of times, there are free drinks available. Secondly, and as some of our performers are returning to our club, we now have our very own "Hall of Fame". Any guest performer who we book more than once, is automatically inducted into the Hall of Fame. We now have two acts and will shortly make that four!

The club held its first "In Concert" evening in September, featuring Boo Hewerdine and Lou Brown. With a slightly different layout to the evening, it is a way of offering a more formal evening of folk music, but nevertheless equally friendly. It was very successful, and as such we will continue with further such events. The next is in Jan 2009.

Coming up in October is Ron Trueman-Border. (RK)

September

2008

Every fourth Thursday of the month, Broadmayne Village Hall is transformed into a cosy music venue, complete with candles, tablecloths, well stocked bar and with an ambience full of fun and music.

The Club started in May 2007 and from the beginning, it was  hoped to promote Folk music to a wider audience, making it free to get in and hopefully entertaining the community with good local and national performers! To date, we have been overwhelmed with the support we have received from the Village Hall Committee at Broadmayne, the audience, the performers, and the people who help us run such a successful night.

Our various guests to date have included Tim Laycock, Paul Downes, Stompin Dave, Cloudstreet, Bram Taylor as well as our local favourites- all of whom have added so much to the fun and variety of the evenings. We hope to continue the success of the club with future guests such as the wonderful Belshazzar's Feast, Sara Grey and Kieren Means, Ron Trueman-Border and many more...

The continued support of our members, has given us the opportunity to put on concert nights- the usual Sunray magic, combined with a concert setting and some excellent guests. These heavily subsidised nights will offer the chance to see both national performers and maybe lesser known but excellent musicians, the first of which will be Boo Hewerdine on Saturday September 13th. Boo is an excellent performer and producer of bands like 'The Corrs', writer of great songs written for many well known singers like Eddi Reader. So come along and enjoy the lovely voice and songs of the originator of 'Patience of Angels'. Ticket prices are £3 for members, £5 all others and are available on the door or in advance from the website , or by phoning Bob on 07786654074. (JW)
